Updated: August 02, 2011, 07:41

AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) The International Cycling Union has approved a four-year race license for the Tour of Beijing, the first World Tour event in Asia.

The UCI confirms that the first Tour of Beijing will be held Oct. 5-9.

UCI President Pat McQuaid says the race gives teams and sponsors a "unique opportunity'' to develop their image.

McQuaid has made the globalization of cycling a priority since becoming president in 2005.

The UCI World Tour comprises 27 stage races and one-day classics to decide the annual rankings for riders, teams and countries.
