SIERRA NEVADA, Spain (AP) Spaniard Daniel Moreno won a mountainous fourth stage of the Spanish Vuelta to move 43 seconds behind new overall leader Sylvain Chavanel.

The Katusha rider hung on to the wheel of Saxobank Sunguard cyclist Chris Sorensen as the pair charged toward the close of the 106-mile leg, the last 15 of which were uphill. Moreno swung past the Dane before the final bend and pulled away for a three-second victory, finishing in 4 hours, 51 minutes, 53 seconds at the 6,929-foot summit of the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

"I'm so happy with this beautiful win - I knew I could make a great performance also because the stage course was very suitable to my characteristics,'' Moreno said.

QuickStep rider Chavanel finished 57 seconds back and leads Moreno by 43 seconds overall.

Wednesday's fifth stage is a 116-mile ride from Sierra Nevada to Valdepenas de Jaen.

British sprint star Mark Cavendish did not finish the stage and abandoned the race.
