Champion Rebecca Romero leaves British cycle team

Updated: October 10, 2011, 09:17

LONDON (AP) Olympic champion Rebecca Romero has left the British cycling team, believing she can't win another medal.

Romero is one of only two women in Olympic history to win a medal in two sports. The 31-year-old cyclist won the gold medal in individual pursuit at the Beijing Games, four years after capturing a silver medal in rowing.

Romero said in a statement Monday she feels she is "no longer on a pathway which will see me fulfill my Olympic ambition to win a second gold medal.''

Romero has struggled recently to make the British team and was left off the squad for this year's track cycling world championships.
